Second only to Superman in popularity, Batman first appears in DC comics’ “Detective Comics” #27, in 1939. He became popular so quickly, a comic book titled “Batman” was published only a year later. In 1960 Batman’s TV show was campy, but later on Batman returned to his dark origin, starting with The Dark Knight Returns (1986), through dozens of movies and videos to the upcoming Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016).
Bruce Wayne, Batman’s secret identity, owns Wayne Enterprises, which he inherited along with Billions of dollars after his parents were tragically murdered in a dark ally. Being a witness to the murder, young Bruce decided to fight crime in the corrupt Gotham city. While keeping the facade of being a playboy, Batman uses gadgets along with his vast knowledge of martial arts and his sharp mind and observation skills to overcome a variety of villains, mainly his arch-nemesis – The Joker.
Batman’s costume changed significantly over the years to match the most innovative technology of it’s time, but the mask, cape, and utility belt, were always present along with the bat sign on his chest. Whenever he’s needed, Gotham city police can summon him by using a searchlight with a bat symbol on it.
Batman is one of the most well known pop culture icons, and his character surpassed his comics origins into newspapers, books, radio and TV shows, video games and even postage stamps.
